Jean Deysel called up to the Springbok squad

One of the strongest runners in world rugby, Sharks flank Jean Deysel has finally got his Springbok call up following an injury to Pierre Spies.

Spies injured his finger in training on Monday, so will miss the whole of the end of year tour unfortunately. One man's misfortune is another man's gain though, as Deysel will join the squad as they tour the UK, Ireland, and Europe.

Deysel has performed consistently well for the Sharks in both the Super 14 and Currie Cup, and anyone who's ever seen him play will know that when he gets ball in hand, it's best if the defence steps out the way.

A monster of a man, there's few players that are more powerful than Deysel when carrying it up. He's good in the loose and strong on defence, and has made a habit of bashing players out the way, crossing the advantage line more often than not.

We were considering making some kind of compilation of his charges from the season, but our friend combatBok has done it for us, with this awesome short video that goes nicely with his selection for the tour.

He'll come off the bench for the Springbok midweek team when they play against Leicester Tigers on Friday night, so lookout for a few of those trademark runs if he's given the opportunity.

Lock the kids away. Get your shotgun. Jean Deysel is here and it's going to take a lot to stop him.

  • hayes slipped, noting special about this guy

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2009 1:38 pm

  • ^ Oh because if he'd bumped off Hayes, that would have been the determining factor for you? Jerk.

Deysel has been incredible for the Sharks for the last two years or so. I've never seen a player bash so many guys out the way with ease.. honestly, not since Jonah Lomu. Deysel does it consitantly, every single match he knocks some defender out the way. I wouldnt compare the two at all, as Deysel hardly has that pace and there's just no point comparing. Perhaps Lauaki at his best is a good comparison, or Alesana Tuilagi once or twice in a season.

Anyway.. great clip, great player. I hope he does well on tour. cheers

  • Any saffas like to name their test starting line ups for the upcoming tour?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2009 2:02 pm

  • ROG sat down on his arse? now theres a suprise.

By Anonymous The Inside Shoulder, at November 04, 2009 2:08 pm

  • He's a big fella alright, but in agreement to the anonymous above, hayes slipped and they show it twice as if it was special. They also show him running through O'Gara, who can't tackle for shit so big deal!!

He is better than what the video shows an we'll see how he does in the internationals.

    the music is naff!

  • good video, love it

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2009 2:20 pm

  • never heard about this fellow...

seems to be an other bok flanker clone such as juan smith, spies or rossouw

will see if he deserve this dramatic soundtrack :)

By Blogger Flooz, at November 04, 2009 2:20 pm

  • Yet another one of the bash-it-up flankers SA produces.

Three backs outside, one defender, and guys like Schalk Burger and Deysel will just run at the defender instead of off-loading.

As for a "clone", let's hope he can deliver a bit a of flair. Without it, he'll look like a poor man's Owen Finegan,

or even worse, Dean Hall packing onto the scrum.

By Anonymous cheyanqui, at November 04, 2009 2:48 pm

  • try run like that against a good international side and he will get his ass knocked out, average player

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2009 3:05 pm

  • He did - the Lions. And it was them licking their wounds. Don't be so ignorant about things you clearly know absolutely nothing about.

Cheyanqui - owen finegan? far from it..

Everyone's a sceptic these days though, so I guess he'll need to score a few winning tries, grow his hair long, peroxide it, then kick some drop goals, before anyone outside of SA actually believes that this guy is decent.

By Anonymous Scotsdale, at November 04, 2009 3:30 pm

  • Geeez, what is wrong with people on here....no one seems to appreciate anything...the clip of JW everyone is saying he is average and nothing special and in this clip everyone is saying this guy is nothing special....

maybe this guy will come off the bench and get ruined and will turn out to be just another player, but seriously so what if hayes slipped and ROG got sat down, what about the rest of the video?

You cant watch that and not think, 'I'll look out for that guy when he comes on...'

I thought he looks impressive and given some room, dangerous. I thought his take from the charge down was great as well....

    Thanks RD

  • One of the best flankers in world rugby. In fact, if he was playing for any other country he'd make the starting 15.

  • Just another thug being talked up by the Saffas!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2009 3:49 pm

  • a thug because he plays hard? maybe pdv was right, you pussies should go get tutu's

By Anonymous rehanb, at November 04, 2009 4:02 pm

  • btw he also knocked off, olivier (well known as a hrd defender), jamie roberts dragged vickery along.

By Anonymous rehanb, at November 04, 2009 4:05 pm

  • he played well in the super 14 for sharks and for emerging sprinboks vs lions, but this vido makes out to be world beater.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2009 4:08 pm

  • To the above, I second that - tutu's indeed!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2009 4:11 pm

    Cant wait!

By Anonymous themull, at November 04, 2009 4:23 pm

By Anonymous Ted, at November 04, 2009 4:38 pm

  • looks like a player u want to battle along with rather than against :)

By Blogger sebastian, at November 04, 2009 4:40 pm

  • So hang on, he's brilliant, because John Hayes slipped, he caught a bad kick from Earl Rose, and he bashed O'Gara out of the way? I have to say, I'm not convinced. Especially considering that he lost the ball in contact after Hayes's slip.

By Anonymous Kearney for tests, at November 04, 2009 4:48 pm

  • frankyH

the difference between deysel and lomu is that lomu knocked players out of the way while running at speed, and continued to run at speed thereafter, getting away from the cover.

with deysel, although he knocks people over he,he completely slows down and the second tackler nearly always gets him.

  • Guys, the dude who made this vid, and other Sharks/SA fans, have seen Deysel play week in and week out. He's done more than just enough to make a short 1 minute clip. Do you REALLY think that RD would be singing his praises if that were the case?

Some guys need to lighten up and stop being so critical of every damn thing that gets posted.

I've watched Deysel all season, as well as last, and he is pure quality. He's far from being the best around at this stage. I doubt he's even ready to start regularly for the Boks, but he's more than worthy of being right up there, and can no doubt hold his own against all the NH doubters can throw at him.. tutus and all.

By Anonymous Shaft, at November 04, 2009 4:59 pm

By Anonymous McBull, at November 04, 2009 5:00 pm

  • Lomu was a total animal, i mean look at all the tries he scored against the Springboks... LOL

By Anonymous McBull, at November 04, 2009 5:03 pm

  • haha McBull calling john hayes a brit is not a wise move.........

Video is impressive, he has a good technique for running at defenders and i'd imagine the rest of his play is pretty decent too.

The lad who puts up these videos has one or two on youtube slagging off BOD. I'm a massive fan of O'driscoll but they are kinda funny..... Check them out.

    Me thinks the irish team will be 15.kearney 14.bowe 13BOD 12D'arcy/P.Wallace 11Fitzgerald 10Sexton 9O'Leary 8Heaslip 7D.Wallace 6Ferris 5P.O.C 4Cullen 3Hayes 2Flannery 1Healy

not a half bad team but any thoughts on what the SA team will be?

we have the best chance of the N.H teams

Jesus christ I'd love nothing better than to wipe the smile of the hypocritical bokke supporters.

  • not going to happen. Biggest challenge will be the French.

By Anonymous McBull, at November 04, 2009 5:48 pm

  • French are too inconsistent but they do have a brillant team still think ireland will pose more of a threat to SA though.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2009 5:51 pm

  • Yeah, but Cheyanqui, you take a guy like this, who runs through defenders and pair him with someone like Brussow who DOES offload (set up two tries in the final), and you should be pretty good.

Kinda like Rocky Elsom the way he seems to just keep on going - except that yeah, Elsom can offload as well.

I didn't notice it the first time around, but after someone here mentioned it - Hayes did slip, so it's a little funny to have that clip in there...and to be honest, I'm a little impressed with ROG in that he even ATTEMPTED to tackle that fella. I would've thought he'd be too scared...

By Anonymous smitty, at November 04, 2009 5:58 pm

  • I'm also a little worried for Ireland's sake. They looked really powerful in the 6N, but that was before the Heineken Cup and Magners League lackluster performances by Munster - which seems to comprise more than half the squad. I hope I'm wrong and it's just the guys returning from the Lions tour hadn't had the chance to get back on form...but it seems like Ireland peaked this year in the 6N and SA just seems to keep getting better and better...like I said, I hope I'm wrong. Without a doubt, it's bound to be an exciting match in any case.

By Anonymous smitty, at November 04, 2009 6:03 pm

  • Hayes slipped that is clear, that match was appauling weather conditions. ROG cant really tackle to begin with and im a stalwart irish fan but that is just the truth.

I have tickets for the SA v Ireland match and i cant simply wait to see Deysel got hammered by Ferris my idol

By Anonymous Blindflanker, at November 04, 2009 6:04 pm

  • ^ NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! Boks are just far too strong. If the lions couldn't even do it, how do ireland think they are going to???

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2009 6:12 pm

  • I still think the French are going to be the ones to pose the most threat to SA, even then I hate to say it - I still think the boks will win...they just have so much depth and power..

I dont actually know how you could possibly come to that coclusion about us Irish and the saffas from the comments above.Idiot

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2009 7:26 pm

  • Looking forward to the game against the Irish but not the tsunami of anti-SA bleating on sites like this onethat inevitably follows a NH loss to the Springboks - "thugs", "the ref", "arrogant saffa supporters", "we would have won but for Burgher", "we would have won but for their boring playing style", "we would have won but for ROG". What's next? "He slipped in the tackle"?. If you do lose, deal with it for once.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2009 7:39 pm

  • Lol not sure Hayes would be happy with being called British! Pretty sure Munster is in Ireland (there are politics involved here McBull - better to stay uninvolved!)

This guy looks good - will give us something to think about up here in the NH. But running past big John as he's slipping and avoiding a ROG tackle are probably not this guy's finest moments. I'm more worried about Brussow personally - tackler and jackler extraordinaire.

By Anonymous Dan, at November 04, 2009 7:47 pm

  • ah in all honesty you dont need 2 off-loading flankers. let this lad run all day brossow turn over every ball in the game and what more do you need?

    ireland starting 15...

    1.hayes 2.flannery 3.o'healy 4.o connell 5. o'callaghan; 6.ferris 7.wallace 8.heslip 9.redden 10.sexton 11.earls 12.fitzgerald 13. o'driscall 14.bowe 15.kearney

  • FUCKING HELL STOP GENERALISING!!! PLENTY OF LIONS SUPPORTERS BELIEVE THE LIONS WOULD HAVE DONE BETTER HAD BURGER BEEN SENT OFF THE PITCH FOR HIS INDESCRETION, THAT IS AN OPINION AND ITS A VALID ONE (any team would find a match easier if they had a player up on the opposition!!!) saying that doesnt mean they are whining about the match! and also, fuck, the SA team (which i add is not you guys, for all those that say "we beat the rest of the world etc") did do a good job in the lions tour, but maybe you shouldnt forget it wasnt a whitewash was it!!! You guys bitch about the NH style of rugby, yet you say "if you lose deal with it!" ......well if you lose to the NH style of rugby stop bitching about it!!!

ITS GETTING BORING READING ABOUT HOW "We south africans who won the world cup are gonna beat yoouuu guys!" how many of you played in the world cup? if you want to take that road at least say "the south african team is gonna beat the NH teams!"

and before you criticise me, read my earlier post where i actually think this guy looks promising!

    By Anonymous No.7, at November 04, 2009 9:55 pm

  • Anonymouse a few up.. I come to that conclusion easily, because some of these comments are idiotic.

And in future use a name please mate - at least then I can discuss with you directly.

    No.7 eaaaassssy tiger. :)
It was 2-0, then a second string/experimental side for the third test. If it were 3-0 would you then only consider it a whitewash?

anyway, that aside.. we need to quit bitching and moaning at eachother and try have adult debate. Difficult at times though, as certain groups are defensive and touchy, and others are arrogant.

BUT - that's just a small few who come across like that. I like to believe the 'good' guys dont feel the need to shout their mouths off.

Empty cans make the most noise.. remember that on the internet ;)

  • We heard all this before after the Super 14 final....with Spies...about how he was unstoppable and would singlehandedly defeat the Lions.....in the end he did bugger all in the series...and Brussouw was far more important.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2009 10:16 pm

  • It was Sky Sports who created all that hype Anonymous, dont blame the saffas for that. We were a little shocked at it all actually.

By Anonymous Benson, at November 04, 2009 10:18 pm

  • I notice how the Irish are very defensive of their little team.

Just because you can beat the rest of the rubbish teams up there, doesn't mean you're on the same level as a Southern Hemisphere team, lads.

Not one Irish player would make it into the Springbok 15, not one.

By Anonymous Lar, at November 04, 2009 10:23 pm

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2009 10:25 pm

  • Im not entirely sure how it works but I thought the final result was 2-1, SA won the first 2 tests and the lions won the last.... SA deserved the wins, but there is no taking away from the lions that they won one of the matches...

and yes, i would only consider it a whitewash if they had won all 3 tests....Just the same as a team in the 6N only is a grandslam winner if they are undefeated.....

    By Anonymous No.7, at November 04, 2009 10:38 pm

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2009 10:40 pm

  • Lar your right we are defensive about are team and so we should be why wouldnt we defend our team when people make stupid comments.BOD would make in into the SA team easy.Possibly Kearney as well now that F.Steyn is gone but i doubt any more of our players would get in the starting 15 as SA are a without a doubt the more talented team.Still think Irealnd will win though!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2009 11:01 pm

South Africa have about 10 very, very good loose forwards that would walk into any other team.

Juan Smith, Burger, Pierre Spies, Kankowski, Potgieter, Stegman, Brussow, DEYSEL, John Makwena... just to name a few.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2009 11:20 pm

  • Top 5 flankers in the world in no particular order,

    1. Brussow
    2. Juan Smith
    3. Schalk Burger
    4. Jean Deysel
    5. Dewald Potgieter

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 05, 2009 12:10 am

  • SO, despite the fact that the Saffers have long been one of the greatest producers of talent in the rugby world, particularly, forwards, and more particularly back rowers (Juan Smith, Brussow, Burger, Russouw, Spies, Kankowski, Desyel and probly a dozen more who'd make most national team squads - certainly f-ing Irelands)this guys is crap?
Hayes slipped, ROG is crap huh? So your players are rubbish, they sl;ip over in tackles or can't tackle at all. Tough shit.
Thing is I normally love the Irish, crazy alchos that they are, but this ones on this site give their whole country a bad name.
Ireland has never been no 1 in the world, never beaten NZ, is clearly behind SA atm, is ranekd fourth, has never been beyond the quarters of a world cup.
All these things need to be rectified before any Irishman can claim any kind of superiority over SA when it comes to rugby.
And I aint even a saffer.

By Anonymous Phil, at November 05, 2009 1:00 am

  • Everyone whoose saying he's not good are lions supporters LOL. We watch good competitions like the currie cup. We've seen him any we know he's incredibly good.
Also how can anyone say that the boks are boring. They're the only team in the tri nations to score a bonus point for four tries and over the whole comp they scored the most tries. I don't think that outscoring the all blacks and wallabies for tries is too bad really. Get over it we won the series

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 05, 2009 1:06 am

  • I'm Irish and even I admit that we're on the level of Italy and Scotland most of the time. We're a small nation but we have heart, and I think that is what counts.

We don't have much, but we are proud to win the Grand Slam.

  • Wonder where anon above is from? While some of them are valid and Deysel has no international experience, where are McCaw, Jones, Collins, Elsom, Dusatoir (the handful of other top French flankers), Ferris, Wallace?

I'm not a BOD defender, but for someone who can't sidestep because he's overweight, explain how he destroyed De Villiers a couple of weeks ago and has been the most consistent performer in NH in new season? And don't use the excuse about fitting in and defensive alignment, it was a one on one and Drico smoked him (disappointing for me coz dV plays for my team). BOD's 1 weakness is he has lost his pace (40 a day cigarette habits do that).

I think the games are going to be way closer than some one's above ridiculous comments. If France's coaches don't dick around, it'll be a 1 score game, and likewise the Irish one.

Before coming onto this site I never realised the hatred that exists between SA and Ire fans. Maybe I've found the reason they only play each other once every 3 seasons. Can't be paired too often or something. SA fans may not realise it, besides the numerous trophies resting in SA's or the Bulls' hands, Ireland currently has 4 out of the 5 they participated in last year, HCup, ML, 6N GS, Churchill Cup. The only non runner was Connacht reaching the Challenge Cup 1/4 final.

Tone down the vitriol.... Until the 28th at least.

  • I find it hilarious how all these cocky South Africans say Irish people are too defensive, but then start insulting us and saying our team is crap when we say an uncapped player of theirs isn't brilliant.

And Lar if by that 'shudder' thing you're implying that Ferris is a bad player, well, you're simply out of your God damned mind.
And Kearney and BOD would unquestionably get into the SA team. Plus a few other maybes like Bowe, Fitzgerald, Ferris, Heaslip, and now Sexton.

By Anonymous Kearney for tests, at November 05, 2009 1:37 am

  • And Huh!! the 3rd, you're a gentleman and a scholar. I agree with everything you said there, even if my previous post says otherwise.

By Anonymous Kearney for tests, at November 05, 2009 1:41 am

  • I used to think there was a point in arguing some of the garbage that is spouted here, if only to defend the integrity of my team. It's very obvious from this thread that there is no point. All of the most inflammatory and ridiculous comments are obviously being made by kids or those with a mental age of 16 at most. More importantly there is no real discussion on the upcoming tests, loads of people have asked for a suggested SA starting 15 yet there have been no responses. Doesn't that say something about the quality of commentary here?

By Anonymous Lorcan, at November 05, 2009 2:35 am

  • Kearny for tests, Ferris was HUMILIATED when he played against the Cheetahs, Brussow molested him.

"plus a few other maybes like Bowe, Fitzgerald, Ferris, Heaslip, and now Sexton."

So Bowe will probably take the best winger in the worlds position, Bryan Habana? and I assume old one eye will take the illusive wizard of Jp Pietersens spot? Oh and lets not forget Sexton... He will no doubt take Morne Steyn's position, a man who has nerves of steal. I don't need to mention all of Morne's game winning attributes, do I?

BOD 4 LIFE, you're obviously very upset. Richie Mccaw? That old thing? Sorry, he was outplayed 3 games out of 3 by Brussow. He's broken down and old, wonder if he'll even make the 2011 world cup?

You can mention Ireland winning all their little Trophies, it doesn't impress me, because they're NH competitions.

It seems the Irish are the most vocal of the NH fans, learn to shut your mouths like the Scottish do.

    IRELAND 14 GEORGIA 10

Thanks for the video RD and CB

  • to the guy that lited the top 5 flankers in the world...
you listed only SA players, ok admitidly all good players, but then how do you explain tom croft basically out playing them in all 3 lions tests? so sureley he should be on the list....
    and how about rocky elsom?
and i take it your only thinking about current form, because if you were taking in general over the last say.. 4 years, then why is mcaw not in there, or collins, or before that betson? or back dailaigio and hill? all these players, are just as good or better than the list you have made,
there is alot of bias on this site, think globably, not just in your country.

  • Anon above, BOD? old and slow. Fitzgerald? please... would he take Bryan Habana's spot? haha. Earls? Oh the guys that knocks on every time he touches the ball? POC? Haha, no thanks... we have the two best locks in the world. Heaslip? Pierre Spies. Ferris? As mentioned... Brussow, with his under performing Cheetahs pack gave him a nice spanking... so much that he accused Brussow of cheating.

Difference between the players is that one team wins World Cups, the other shares a flight home with Georgia and Namibia.

  • So rugbydump posts a vid of a pretty impressive flanker and gives him a good write-up, and the first reaction of a dozen or so NH “fans” is to slate the guy? That’s what 15 year-olds do. Chances are you haven’t even seen him play, apart from the one minute here. Trust me, he’s good. Why not wait till you’ve seen him in action before making daft comments?

It’s a pity he’ll only see mid-week action though. I would have liked to see him up against the likes of Ferris, Dusatoir and Parisse.

Another mid-week Bok to look out for is no.8, Ashley Johnson. This guy also prefers the direct route.

By Blogger Jacques, at November 05, 2009 2:22 pm

  • My god there are so many tw@ts using this website. I haven't even read one decent post from a safa, they're all just stupid anti NH jibes. Just comment on the rugby you're making yourselves sound really really dumn.

And Ireland are not the best team the NH has to offer, i'd say Wales or France (if they're having a good day). And that SA nob who said nobody in the irish team would walk into the safa team, i'm sorry but Brian O'driscoll would walk into any team in the world without any questions.

  • Im not gonna slag anyone on this forum theres enough people doing that.....

    "FrankyH said...
^ Oh because if he'd bumped off Hayes, that would have been the determining factor for you? Jerk."

Franky you try to be so high and mighty all the time, and the second post from this clip ur off slagging people showing your true colours. Shoe is on the other foot there. Grow up.

FACT: Planetrugby which is an INTERNATIONAL fanzine for rugby fans from around the WHOLE world has been making its best ever team from all the WORLDS players past and present.

Best outside centre by an absolutely huge margin was BOD.
This was by all the worlds fans not Irish or NH fans so before anyone says so, planetrugby as chosen by the general worlds public has found BOD to be the best outside centre there ever was.

Why he made into this comments section on a clip of Jean Deysel is beyond me, but before anyone else tries to say BOD is rubbish, The fact is he is the best Centre on the planet ever.

Deysel looks good and strong and direct as a flanker should be, so kudos to him. Hope he takes his opportunity well because id say there is nothing worse than living in the shadow of Spies and Burger. They have been stealing all the thunder lately.

And to be honest he wont get another chance as those two are rarey injured.

SA are the favourites for all the games and i reckon they will beat Ireland easily as we will just give away too many penos at the break down and the nerveless machine steyn will boot em from anywhere.

    Reality sucks!!!

By Blogger Kenny, at November 05, 2009 4:33 pm

  • This constant argument about NH vs SH is getting so old.Thank you to the person who finally posted a possible Bok starting 15.Also to the person that suggested the Irish team was at the level of Scotland and Italy,i mean thats just stupid! We are at least at the level of Wales and France(french best team in NH at the moment)Seriously do you think Scotland or Italy could win the GS.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 05, 2009 5:17 pm

  • Kenny makes some very good points.I dont think Ireland will win but I obviously hope im wrong. The Irish team do believe thay can win though and that is important because whenever NZ come to town we basically try to keep the losing margin as low as possible.Back to the video and I havent seen enough of Deysel but he looks good.A player like that makes the opposition shit themselves whenever he has ball in hand.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 05, 2009 5:26 pm

  • This vid, doesn't do deysel any credit - I've been watching him for a while now and he is better than this vid suggest. However, to be honest I don't see him even making it into the starting 15, but I'm glad he is ganna be given a run during the mid-week games. Can't wait for all of the SA tests, it should be good stuff! Come on BOKKE!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 05, 2009 6:18 pm

  • @ Kenny - The Anonymous clown who went out his way to be an arse IS a jerk. How can one say 'nothing special about this guy', based on the fact that he just watched a one minute video, and that hayes 'slipped'? That's the point. How can you tell ME to grow up when a guy posts as anonymous and says something as unwarranted as that, totally discrediting the article/video etc?

Secondly - if you're referring to planetrugby website, I also saw that they named Martin Johnson as their first choice lock. There goes their credibility right there I'd say.

And no, BOD is not the greatest center of all time, and he certainly wouldn't walk into any test side, not now anyway. Maybe when he was younger..

But this is about Deysel, and he is quality and deserves to be on tour, whether John Hayes slipped or not.

the ireland team you picked is really poor.

first of all, hayes plays tight-head,and HEALY plays loose-head. secondly, there is no wat cullen will start ahead of o'callaghan.
o'leary is ten times better than reddan, wallace is irelands best option at 12,and fitzgerald will be on the wing

on a side note,i was really disapointed to see that ian humphries was not picked by declan kidney for the autumn internationals.as most of the northern hemisphere would know,he has been having a brilliant season for ulster in the magners league and heineken cup,and really deserves a chance.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 05, 2009 10:35 pm

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 05, 2009 10:41 pm

  • Jaque Fourie's significantly better than BOD. Bigger, stronger, faster and smarter. BOD may look good playing soft club rugby in the UK, but looks average when playing against the top international sides. He's undersized player and reminds me of a slightly better version of Robbie Fleck.

By Anonymous McBull, at November 05, 2009 11:04 pm

  • Nonu would have to be pretty close to being the best centre... I think i even saw him kick a 50m clearing kick on defence against the Wallabies in Tokyo!

Obviously Stirling was awsome at full fitness.

and BOD is still awsome regardless of his age.

And McAlister was class before he went to Sale... hopefully he can get back to his best?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 05, 2009 11:08 pm

  • Stirling Mortlock when fit and on form would make most teams. I'd probably choose him over BOD anyway. Ma'a Nonu is too inconstant, although he is a constant threat, mascara and all

Anon above... Burger a spent force? See his tackle on du Preez?

Brussow is not only a better fetcher than Mccaw, he's a far stronger ball carrier, check out the Currie Cup final if you don't believe me... he was tossing off 4-5 players every time he had the ball. Total animal.

Oh and Adam Thompson, that guys not even a man... he's so pathetic he beats his girl friend.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 06, 2009 5:03 am

  • Brussow's one of the strongest players in world rugby and is currently light years ahead of McCheat. He outplayed McCheat numerous times this year. McCheat and Carter are the only "great" players in New Zealand right now, so naturally their supporters will do anything to defend their honour. Also, Burger was always better than McCheat and is quickly returning to top form. Ignorant people will disagree because they think Burger's a true fetcher.

I'll return to rugbydump after the EOY tout and will brag about my boys. Just 'cause I'm nasty like that.

if you're referring to planetrugby website, I also saw that they named Martin Johnson as their first choice lock. There goes their credibility right there I'd say. "

Why is that, he has one a World Cup as captain, a Lions tour in SA as captain, Heineken Cups as captain, 5 Guinness prems as captain, 5 6Nations as captain, Triple Crowns as captain. Hes actually captained 2 lions tours.
Under his captaincy in 2003 they beat the entire southern Hemisphere on tour as well. A grandslam tour.

What the fuck else does the guy have to do!!!!

Now if your calling the anonymous a jerk well your throwing eggs at your own windows now because if he s not one the best locks there ever was with a record like that, than i dont know who is. And before you even dream of mentioning it im Irish.

Your arguement is actually pathetic Franky H, tell me a lock with a better or even near it record to that one.

  • .....although tbf Kenny's comment above does have a point....

One lock i like kenny is Matfield (im not a bok supporter btw...)

I think matfield is a fantastic ball carrier and lineout jumper, and he does have skills with ball in hand.

but i think johnson does have the more distinguished record. and JW said himself that without someone like Johnson he would have been lost. (for everyone else reading, im not saying JW is a god or anything im just saying that a fly half that is a great player when on form says he feels like without a player like Johnson, he wouldnt have acheived as much.)

    By Anonymous No.7, at November 06, 2009 2:45 pm

  • Kenny, so a record as a great captain makes him a great player? I'll name a few that could keep him out a side as a PLAYER.. Frik Du Preez, Willie John Mcbride, Colin Meads, John Eales, Victor Matfield.. the list goes on.

None of those players have a record like Johnson's probably, possibly Eales though, and Matfield must be close to it I'd imagine. As a player, I'd choose Eales and Matfield over him any day.

Captaining winning sides doesn't make one a great player, certainly not the greatest ever anyway. Didn't Will Carling also captain England? Francois Pienaar and South Africa?

And Planetrugby is most definitely predominantly NH focussed, which isn't a bad thing, just the way it is..

You need to chill out a bit bud - you're going to pop a vein or something :)

By Anonymous FrankyH, at November 06, 2009 2:55 pm

Eales thinks hes great too Franky

"Captaining winning sides doesn't make one a great player"

Yep Franky he was just flukey with all those titles he won with all those different teams, definitely not a great player or probably the best lock there ever was.

When Matfield has a list that long with maybe captain after it than ill listen to you.

And that bit about Will Carling was pathetic, come on everyone hates that git, hes not even worth a mention.

Check the comments for the previews of all the weekends internationals on plantrugby now, nearly every single comment on the previews for each match are form SH readers...strange for an NH dominated webzine dont you think!!!

"fourie is stronger, faster, bigger, and smarter than BOD"

while fourie is bigger, and their pace is about the same,o'driscoll is far stronger and smarter than fourie.o'driscoll is often seen as weak, cos he is so small(5'10),but as you can see from his tries against wales and england in this years six nations, along with numerous big hits,he posseses immense strentgh.
also,o'driscoll is by far the smatest outside back in tne world, and his skill-level is unrivaled.

  • Kenny if you'd cool down for a second you'd see that I didn't deny that having a record like that means he's a great captain.
My point about Will Carling was that being captain of a side doesn't make you a great player. Same for Francois Pienaar - he won the world cup and won the Super 10 with Transvaal, as captain, but everyone knows he wasn't the greatest flanker ever. He was good enough to be in the side though and a great leader - the same as Martin Johnson.

Do you honestly think people will sit back and say 'Wow, that Martin Johnson.. what a GREAT player'? Or will it be 'incredible leader, and an intimidating force'. John Eales was a far better player, but perhaps less of the imposing force that Johnson was. Same goes for Matfield.

Surely you can agree with that on some level?

The only think i will agree with there is that you put the words martin johnson and great player and intimidating force in the same line.

As i have just easily imposed on, so much so that 3 others agreed with me nearly straight away is that he is easily the best lock rugby has ever had and im not budging on that.

And by the way i am calm, in fact im in work being paid right now to be calmly right, if u will just admit it ill go home, no in fact i am going home now cause its 5(yippeee!!) i have a match in an hour and half which i will play with enjoyment safe in the knowledge that i am right and you, my stubborn friend, deep in your heart of hearts, knows it.

I rest my case, retiring the righteous champ!! (so many r's)

  • Pretty comical most of the above comments are....

You's are actually embarassing yourselves....Particualrly the Saffers claiming Irish people are very defensive about our team yet once anything negative is said about your we get this kind of rubbish that we see above....

Irish people too are getting a bit petty so why cant we all just debate like adults...Sure it can get heated but at least make sensible arguments...It might make you resemble someone who has conquered puberty....

  • 39-3

oh yeah it was against sharks b team, that makes bod coming up short even more pathetic. thanks for the reminder, i'll return the favour:

    2-1 (lions tour)

  • bod must be used to coming up short (world cup 2007, pool stage)

i see sa's quota team lost to a euro club side, lol. finally something to celebrate

  • Vdm what really is your problem? do you actually think BOD should be written off?

how many rugby matches have you ever played?

If any, have you ever played a team worse than your team?

IF so did you play that match 100% right, with no mistakes?

  • BOD stronger and faster than Jaque Fourie? HAHAHA.... Yes, a fat Irish center is faster than the best center in the world... face it, Fourie is younger and has already achieved more in his career.

Deal with it. Ireland 14 Georgia 10.

  • ^ potato potato haha

bod is the second best 13 in the world, i am merely defending my boy, jaque

i gave an example of bod's shortcomings. someone said he's faster than jaque, i disproved that notion by giving an recent example. jaque may not be as fast as a world class wing, but he has speed. remember that delicious try he scored last year against england? i believe he embarrassed one of your wings. he's a stud, please admit it.

bod, due to his lackluster team, will often try too hard and then fall short. he tries to do too much most of the time.

at one point in time he was the best centre in the world, but times change. heroes get old, legends fall and new stars emerge. that's life.

  • VdM = Venereal disease man....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 07, 2009 2:17 am

  • I think John Eales was the best second row of all time. His record is the equal of Johnson's and he had more to his game.
Johnson was a great player though, that's undeniable.
This whole thing about the best player in the world isn't important though, it's just a matter of opinion.

  • i'm a girl, is that alright with you?

By Anonymous VdM, at November 08, 2009 9:41 am

  • lol Kenny. Hope you had a good match mate, and took out some of that pent up anger on the opposition.. BUT, no, you're still wrong.

There is absolutely no way that Martin Johnson was a better rugby player than John Eales, period. Sorry, I won't agree with you on that one.

I am willing to say that you probably never saw a lot of Eales play, or some of the other guys I mentioned, so perhaps that's why you are still stuck in this notion that Johnno was the best ever.

As a player (NOT a captain/leader), I'd compare him to Bakkies Botha, but maybe with slightly less of a reputation. Big, strong, intimidating. Throws his weight around, has decent hands. Wins a bit of lineout ball. Ends there. Botha is probably a faster runner though.

Once again, great leader, enforcer type, etc.. but not the greatest player ever, by a long shot. I disagree completely. But thats my opinion and you have yours. No big deal.

  • Eales gets a lot of praise because he could toe punt a ball. Matfield and Botha are far superior to both of them, anyway. Have a good one.

  • Eales was famous for alot of things. He was awesome in the line-out, great in defence, had the skill to play the ball, was an athlete and got through heaps of work, kicked goals well, was good at the breakdown and was a great captain and leader.
He captained Australia to wins in the World Cup, Tri-Nations, Bledisloe and Lions victories, amongst other things.

  • Oh and he was nicknamed Nobody, as in 'nobody's perfect', because he almost never made a mistake.
