Stick Phil Vickery on the wing - Great prop try from 2002

Since the weekend's Test between the British & Irish Lions and the Springboks in Durban, Phil Vickery has had his reputation diminished slightly as he took a mauling in the scrum. On the wing, Ugo Monye has suffered a similar fate following his lack of finishing.

The pieces of the puzzle now fit, and after seeing this try from 2002, it all makes sense – stick big Phil out on the wing. With finishing like this, you can’t go wrong.

It was May 2002 and the Zurich Premiership (as it was known then) Quarter Final between Gloucester and Newcastle at Kingsholm.

The home side, Gloucester, scored nine tries as they romped to an emphatic 60-9 victory, scoring some fantastic tries, but none more memorable than this great effort from their captain courageous, Phil Vickery.

Some superb lead up play from the scintillating James Simpson-Daniel allowed Vickery to be released on the left wing. Showing the Shed his impression of a top class left winger, the big guy fended off the attention of Gareth McClure, then ran over Liam Botham as he dived over for a quality try.

He’s had a long and illustrious career, so it would be a shame for the 33 year old to be remembered for what happened at the hands of The Beast last Saturday.

This try sheds a little light on the situation, and there’s no doubt that Vickers would have easily finished both those chances that Monye had.

Ben May comes within inches of scoring the greatest ever prop try

The Chiefs game against the Reds last weekend was one of the most entertaining games of the season. It was a great example of the ELV's working advantageously, with a spectacle of running rugby and great skill on display from both sides.

There was one particular moment in the game though that I thought just had to be seen by the Rugbydump visitors, particularly as it was almost entered into our archives of great prop tries.

119Kg Chiefs prop Ben May broke the line after a great offload from fullback Mils Muliana on half way. May showed great acceleration as he sped off then dummied to the chip kick, before audaciously throwing a goose step! He fell short only inches from the line after a great tackle from Reds fullback Clinton Schifcofske, which resulted in the subsequent pass going forward, which was marginal from what I could see.

May took a bit of stick from his teammates for his stunning 50m run, but admitted afterwards he probably should have passed to give his team the try-scoring opportunity.

"I was just in the clear.

"I had wingers outside me but I had a bit of tunnel vision, I guess. I've had plenty of ribbing about that," he said.

Prop Trevor Woodman scores an incredible try

For a while now I've been trying to track down the best tries scored by forwards of the chubbier sort - Props. We've managed to get hold of quite a few, but in all honesty, this one for me takes the cake... so to speak.

Trevor Woodman MBE, the World Cup winner who lifted the trophy with England four years ago, played his rugby at Gloucester for nine years before moving up north to Sale. He unfortunately had to retire prematurely due to a nagging back injury sustained in training.

Woodman achieved great things in his career though, with the World Cup win in 2003 being the main highlight obviously. But when Gloucester played the Saints only a few months later, Woodman set the game alight by scoring an amazing solo effort.

With the score tied at 17-17, the ball was swung to the out of position Woodman who, with all the confidence in the world, attacked the line as though he were a centre of international quality.

The rest is history.

Stuart Barnes, ex international player and now commentator, chose it as the Try of the Week.

"One stride short of 40 metres from the Northampton line, the front rower eyed the gap - a gap that didn't exist until two abrupt hand-offs had despatched the Saints hooker and fly-half unceremoniously to the Gloucester dirt.

"I swear there was a hint of a sidestep to unbalance the full-back before a third resounding fend left Beal eating grass and the Shed doing cartwheels. It was some score."

Gethin Jenkins charge down, kick ahead, try!

Welsh front rower Gethin Jenkins is fast making a name for himself as one of the best props around. For a man his size he has amazing ball skills and can move quicker than most men who ply their trade in the front of the scrum. Just ask Ireland.

As Ronan O'Gara went to clear, Jenkins came out of nowhere to charge down the ball, chase it hard, and then dribble it with control that countryman Ryan Giggs would be proud of. Falling on the ball to score a fantastic try, O'Gara stood on his fingers, which prompted the ball throwing. All in good nature though, part of the game.

Another contender for one of the best prop tries ever.

Greg Holmes Try vs Ireland 2006

After many requests, here it is. ANOTHER brilliant try from a front rower.

Who says fat boys can't move?

Phil Kearns' comment says it all - "Front rowers are not allowed to run more than 3 meters for a try - it's in the bylaws".

Richard Bands try vs All Blacks 2003

Dunedin 2003, Springbok prop Richard Bands scores this memorable try against the All Blacks in the Tri Nations.

Running at full tilt and bashing over Carlos Spencer on the way to the line, Bands scored one of the all time classic prop tries.

Front rowers around the world would be proud. Hell, any backline player would also be chuffed with scoring a try like this.

CJ van der Linde try from the halfway line

"He did it last week,it's gonna happen again!" CJ gets the ball on the halfway line and sprints to score against the Bulls, including a 'sidestep' to beat the last man, who was actually Pedri Wannenburg the huge Bulls number eight.

There's been a few great tries scored by Props over the years. Who could forget Richard Bands against the All Blacks about 2 seasons ago? And then more recently, Greg Holmes for Australia.

CJ van der Linde great try vs the Stormers

Cheetahs prop CJ van der Linde scores a great try against the Stormers in this years Super 14. Amazing talent and speed for such a big man. Very similar to Os Du Randt in his younger years.

The next week against the Bulls, he scored from the halfway line.

Superb.
